Lisa Rani Ray

 (born 4 April 1972) is a Canadian actress. She began her modelling career in India in the early 1990s, appearing for leading Indian brands like Bombay Dyeing and Lakmé. She made her acting debut in 1994 in the film Hanste Khelte. Through her acting career, Ray has demonstrated a penchant for issue-oriented portrayals, most notably in the 2005 Oscar-nominated Canadian film Water and the award-winning South African feature The World Unseen, described by a reviewer as "one of the best-conceived queer films of the past year." 

In 2009, Ray was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable form of blood cancer.  She began writing The Yellow Diaries, a blog about her experiences of having cancer. Her writing and columns have since regularly appeared in multiple major publications. Ray remains an active advocate of stem-cell therapy and has participated in several successful fundraisers and cancer awareness campaigns.

In 2011, Ray began hosting a popular travel show on Discovery Channel India  alongside appearing as host and judge in Food Network's highest rated show, Top Chef Canada.

Ray was born in Toronto to an Indian Bengali Hindu father and a Polish Catholic mother  and grew up in the suburb of Etobicoke. She spoke Polish with her maternal grandmother and watched movies of Federico Fellini and Satyajit Ray with her cinephile dad.  During her childhood she spent some time in Calcutta. 

She excelled academically, doing five years of high school in four, while attending three different high schools: Etobicoke Collegiate Institute, Richview Collegiate Institute and Silverthorn Collegiate Institute

• On June 23, 2009, Ray was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. In April 2010, she announced that she was cancer-free, after a stem cell transplant. As multiple myeloma is an incurable disease, Ray is not completely cured of the disease.

• Was engaged to model Vishesh Uppal in 1993. He was a NRI from Australia who came to India to model and act.He was signed for Achha Anand (Dev Anand's nephew) film Shaksiyat. The film got shelves due to a fight he had with the producer . Next he signed Mrithunjaya opposite Tisca Chopra. That also got shelved. Vishesh was previously engaged to Deepti Bhatnagar and Madhuvanti (Sister of Bhagyashree).
• Lisa Ray was signed for the film Dus,but later replaced by Karishma Kapoor. Lisa's inability to speak Hindi was causing a problem. Karishma Kapoor later exited the film and Shilpa Shetty was signed.
• Voted Star of the Future at the 2002 Toronto Film Festival.
• Starred in the shelved movie Jungle. This was to be Sanjay Dutt's debut film as producer, directed by Rahul Rawail. The film starred Sanjay Dutt, Lisa Ray (replaced by Tisca Chopra) in the female lead. Raveena Tandon was also offered the film. But the project didn't promise to fulfill Sanjay's expectations so in 1991, he canceled it. One of the reasons's were Lisa Ray unable to learn any Hindi.
• Signed for the film Raaz but opted out.
• In 1996, Vinod Khanna was planning on a second film with son Akshaye with Partho Ghosh as the director. He wanted Lisa Ray as the heroine. The film was dropped after Himalay Putra flopped.
• Lisa was offered Chaand Ka Tukadaa but declined.
• Signed the film Kalyug with Sanjay Dutt,Pooja Bhatt and Ajay Devgan. It was eventually made as Naazraz in 1994.

She married Jason Dehni in 2012.
